Windows RT, how to..?

  • Windows on ARMAs we’ve reported earlier today, software developer @imbushuo has managed to install Windows 10 ARM on a Lumia 950 XL, with the majority of features working just as expected.

  • Windows on ARMARM64 chips are considered more energy efficient compared to x86 CPUs from Intel and AMD. Using the new platform, OEMs are able to create even smaller, lighter and powerful devices with the power of full Windows 10. There is a way to install and try Windows 10 for ARM SoCs in QEMU. Here is how.

  • Windows on ARMWhile this project is not totally finished (e.g. No Battery status/charging unknown, no cellular, no audio), I decided to post this thread as many people asked me about the tutorial. This is just a brief tutorial, you need to have plenty of time on this to make this happen. Be careful as some steps are very dangerous.

  • Windows on ARMAs a Surface 2 owner, I have come to grips with the fact that Windows RT, the operating system on my tablet, is a bastardized version of "real Windows". However, I love the OS, as it works great and is very secure. On the RT variant, the user cannot install classic Windows programs. While many see this as a negative, I see it as a positive -- classic Windows viruses and malware cannot be installed either.

  • Windows on ARMHello, Jeff ‘the dude’ Stokes back with a post to help you fully utilize that BYOD experience. That of course would be the Windows Surface RT and Windows Surface 2 tablets. They have a place and that place is Modern Apps. But what about legacy x86 apps you say? You can run those too via RemoteApp, and as Montell Jordan would say…this is how we do it.

  • Windows on ARMEarlier this week, we were tipped to a page on Microsoft's Surface website claiming that the official Surface Ethernet adapter could finally work on the Surface and Surface 2 tablets if they used Windows RT 8.1. Unfortunately, Microsoft later told us the information on that page was incorrect and removed that statement from the site.

  • Windows on ARMWindows RT 8.1 is a Windows-based operating system that's optimized for thin and light PCs that have extended battery life and are designed for life on the go. Windows RT 8.1 only runs built-in apps or apps that you download from the Windows Store. Windows Update automatically keeps your PC up to date and Windows Defender provides up-to-date virus and malware protection.

  • Windows on ARMI upgraded my Surface RT to Windows RT 8.1 RTM tonight. It's not as easy as a regular Windows 8.1 upgrade, and it has some risk associated with it. You could definitely brick your Surface if you do not do this properly. I am not responsible for bricked devices.

  • Windows on ARMWindows RT is the locked-down version of Windows 8 for ARM computers, as seen on Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet and a few other Windows RT devices. Unlike the standard version of Windows 8, Windows RT doesn’t allow you to install your own desktop programs.

  • Windows on ARMWindows RT is a sort of unique member of the Microsoft family of operating systems. It’s Windows, but it’s not. From a more technical aspect, Windows RT is actually the entire Windows OS rebuilt for use on ARM processors, which are what power almost all tablets, smartphones, and other gadgets.

  • Windows on ARMThe recent Wave-D release of the Windows Intune service and the release of System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 enables enterprise management of the Windows RT devices for customers using the Intune standalone management service or System Center Configuration Manager who have obtained a Windows Intune subscription for the management of mobile devices.

  • Windows on ARMOne of the things Windows RT users have found most frustrating is the inability to run traditional desktop apps on their shiny new(ish) device. Although it was never any secret that this would be the case, it's still something that many people were hoping would cease to be an issue thanks to the development community.

  • Windows on ARMMicrosoft's Surface RT and other Windows RT-based machines include the Flash browser plugin, but it only runs on websites Microsoft has whitelisted. We have covered how you can add any website to the Flash whitelist, but now there's an easier way.

  • Windows on ARMThroughout our coverage of Surface RT, a single complaint has repeated itself over and over again: There are not enough apps in the Microsoft Store to offer a complete experience. What could fix this if Microsoft remains unable to win over developers? Jailbreaking of course.

  • Windows on ARMEven though Microsoft has said so many times that Windows RT is the best way to enjoy the new Windows 8 features on a tablet, many have criticized the operating system for not supporting legacy Windows apps.

  • Windows on ARMRecently we discussed how one can create a virtual machine for server admin with a Windows RT device. Sometimes though, you just need putty. Putty is perhaps one of the most used server admin tools by any Windows administrator. In this guide we are going to show how one can also enable using Putty using RemoteApp. The benefits in some situations becomes obvious.

  • Windows on ARMAlthough Windows 8 was designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, we've heard that plenty of users are actually struggling to find a quick way to shut down or reboot their Windows 8 device.

  • Windows on ARMAs you probably know by know if you're a Windows RT tablet owner, Microsoft's new operating doesn't allow users to load Flash websites, unless they're placed on a whitelist created and managed by the Redmond-based technology company.

  • Windows on ARMAlong with the recent release of Windows 8 Microsoft also released Windows RT which is pretty much Windows 8 designed to operate on ARM based processors. For consumers the most obvious difference of this OS is the lack of ability to run legacy software. In enterprises however the biggest missing feature is that this OS is not joinable to a domain and thus cannot be configured using Group Policy.

  • Windows on ARMSummary: Can you run existing Windows apps on Surface RT and other Windows RT devices? If you have the right back-end infrastructure and licenses, Remote Desktop may provide a way.
